Why Character Matters

Why Character Matters

Character can be defined as who we really are when no one is watching. Without character, all the rules in the world will not stop the many negative situations that arise. Character may be one of the most important and valuable things a person can possess. Why is this?

It Holds us to an Internal Code of Ethics

Rules can only keep people on track for a certain length of time. If someone follows rules but has no character, it is only a matter of time before they remove themselves from what they view as the oppression of those rules. Character exists even when rules fail. This is why it is far better to have character before anything else.

It Does Not Require Supervision

Any employer can testify to how frustrating it is to have to “babysit” adult employees. Slacking off one’s job, surfing the net, and taking home office supplies is becoming more common as people’s character declines and their allegiance to self rises. Character allows one to push away the natural urge to make life all about themselves.

It Defines Everything We Do

Character is not just a personality trait that shows itself every now and then. Character is something that goes with us every day, every hour, and every minute. It is an essential part of who we are, and gives us the qualities of trustworthiness and dependability.

It Brings Everyone Together

Living only for your own benefit and interests repels others. Selfishness can be detected from miles away. If each and every person could have strong character, our world would be drawn together in ways that are almost unimaginable.

It Puts Others above Self

Because good character exists even when no one else is watching, it is always looking out for the best interest of others. You can take care of yourself and others at the same time, and character gives this room to happen. If everyone put others first, no one would have to worry about themselves because everyone would already be taken care of.

Knowledge Can Be Taught

Most employers, if honest, would prefer an employee with character over an employee with knowledge. Both attributes are important, but it doesn’t matter how smart someone is if they are embezzling their company of millions of dollars. It matters not how well they can teach if they are harming the students in their care. Many employers would rather hire a good worker who is willing to learn, than try to motivate an employee who is full of knowledge, yet lazy or dangerous.

It Will Help You Do Well No Matter Your Aspirations

No matter what you desire to do in your life, character will help you get there. Reach for opportunities for character growth and you will be a step ahead. You will succeed in life, and in every area, if your character is strong.

Character is much more than a learned habit. It goes to the core of who we are and how we treat those around us. Choose to implement it in your life in order to set you on the path to success today.
