1. Examine your experiences. You’ve already lived quite a few years, but how much have you learned from those years? Start with your childhood and examine your life. What have you learned from the time you were a young child until now? Would you like to learn more?

  • What were your greatest mistakes? What were your greatest failures?
  • Think about successful and unsuccessful people you’ve known. What can you learn from them?

2. Create more experiences. The more you live, the more you’ll learn. Get out of the house and out of your comfort zone. Live your life to the fullest and you’ll gain wisdom more quickly. A complete life gives the opportunity to develop well-rounded wisdom.

3. Review your day. You’ve reviewed your life. Now, make a habit of reviewing each day. See how much you can learn from each day. Apply what you learn and see how many of your regular mistakes you can finally eliminate from your life.

  • It’s not possible to be wise without regular examination.

4. Read. There have been plenty of wise people before you. Much wisdom is contained in books that you can learn from. So read. Learning the advice and perspective of history’s great thinkers can then be applied to your own experiences. You can build your knowledge from a base of expert opinions.

5. Question the status quo. Keep in mind that wisdom isn’t contained within those things that are regional or cultural. If something isn’t universal, it’s probably not true wisdom.

  • For example, religion varies from region to region. Political views vary from country to country. A particular culture isn’t wiser than another, so you’re not likely to find wisdom from these regional things.
  • Create your own understanding of the world. Avoid an understanding that is only derived from your culture.

6. Spend time alone in nature. Getting away from your normal environment is a great way to refresh your perspective. One of the best ways to do this is to spend time alone in nature. Go hiking or camping for a weekend.

  • You’ll find out a lot about yourself, have the freedom to do some serious thinking, and be free from your routine thoughts and habits.

7. Make a list of 10 things you would tell a child. What 10 pieces of advice would you give a child about life? What are your top 10 greatest tips for successful and happy living? Review and update this list regularly.

8. Be willing to let go of your misconceptions. Many of us are open to the idea of adding to our understanding and knowledge. Few of us are willing to seriously contemplate that some of our long-held beliefs are simply wrong. The things you’re certain of that aren’t true are contrary to wisdom.

You can become wise, exercise good judgement, and use your experience to your advantage. Most people fail to learn the lessons of life because they don’t take the time to review their experiences.

You’ve lived. You’ve suffered and failed. You’ve conquered. You can use those experiences to your advantage and develop wisdom from them.
